01

Pre-design

0/6
#1Architect / town planner

Check planning / development approval needs for rooftop plant (height, visual screening, noise) before building approval.

State planning legislation and local planning schemenoise rules
Evidence: Planning approval or exemption confirmation
QLD note: Planning Act 2016 (Qld) and the local government planning scheme.
#2Certifier / structural engineer

Confirm building class, importance level and which NCC edition applies at the date of application.

Evidence: Design criteria statement
QLD note: NCC 2022 (Amdts 1 and 2) mandatory until 30 Apr 2027; NCC 2025 from 1 May 2027. Queensland Development Code also applies.
#4Designers / principal designer / WHS lead

Safe-design review: eliminate or minimise fall risk by design (guardrails over harness, plant set back from edges, clear access route, fragile surfaces).

Evidence: Safe-design report / risk register
QLD note: Same as baseline.
What Fair Dinkum Mechdecks covers

Guardrails are added automatically wherever the deck sits more than 300 mm above the roof, and the clash zone keeps units off screened edges.

#S1SuggestedStructural engineer / designer

Classify the site's atmospheric corrosivity and pick coatings and materials to suit; keep dissimilar metals (steel, aluminium, stainless fixings) isolated from each other and from the roof sheet.

Evidence: Durability statement and coating spec
QLD note: Coastal and tropical sites: often C4–C5; check marine exposure.
#S2SuggestedAcoustic consultant

Check rooftop plant noise and the acoustic screen's performance against the state's environmental noise limits at the nearest receiver.

State EPA noise policyAS 1055
Evidence: Acoustic report / screen performance
QLD note: Environmental Protection (Noise) Policy 2019.
02

Design

0/11
#5Project manager / client

Engage a suitably qualified engineer (CPEng / NER as a minimum benchmark) and confirm any statutory registration needed to certify.

Evidence: Engineer appointment; registration number on certificates
QLD note: Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) required under the Professional Engineers Act 2002.
#6Structural engineer

Structural design of the platform: imposed loads (typically 2.5 or 5 kPa plus equipment weight), wind uplift / sliding / overturning, earthquake connections, deflection limits, materials.

Evidence: Calculations and structural drawings
QLD note: Where in cyclonic Region C: add debris-impact and cyclic-load checks per AS/NZS 1170.2 and NCC cyclonic provisions.
What Fair Dinkum Mechdecks covers

Every unit is checked against its footprint × deck rating (2.5 kPa = 250 kg/m², 5.0 kPa = 500 kg/m²), with total capacity and overload warnings.

#7Structural engineer

Check the metal roof structure (purlins, rafters, primary frame) can carry platform and equipment reactions, and that load transfers to primary structure rather than sheeting.

Evidence: Roof capacity assessment; framing and connection details
QLD note: Same as baseline.
#8FixingsEngineer / access designer

Access and fall-prevention design: stairs, ladders, walkways, guardrails, toe boards, openings, edge protection.

Evidence: Access and edge-protection drawings
QLD note: Same as baseline.
What Fair Dinkum Mechdecks covers

Stairs, 300 mm steps, rung and step ladders, gates and guardrails are placed by edge and shown in 3D, plan and elevation.

#9Engineer / supplier

If a proprietary platform system is used: obtain supplier engineering and test evidence and check it against site wind region, roof pitch, height and load limits.

Evidence: Product compliance data on file
QLD note: Form 73 (Product technical statement) is available (non-mandatory) to document product compliance.
#S3SuggestedStructural engineer

Allow for roof access and construction loads: foot traffic, point loads on sheeting during install, and set-down of equipment before it reaches the platform.

Evidence: Load notes on drawings; install method
QLD note: Same as baseline.
#S4SuggestedStructural engineer

Cyclonic regions: design equipment tie-downs and platform hold-downs for cyclic wind, and check screens and louvres for debris impact.

Evidence: Hold-down and tie-down design
QLD note: Region C/D north of approx. 25°S — required.
#S5SuggestedCertifier / fire engineer

Fire: check roof penetrations and screen / acoustic wall materials against the NCC fire-resistance and non-combustibility requirements for the building class.

Evidence: Fire compliance statement / material data
QLD note: Same as baseline.
#S6SuggestedMechanical engineer

Service clearances: keep manufacturer clearances, refrigerant safety and maintenance access around each unit inside the guarded area.

AS/NZS 5149AS 1668manufacturer data
Evidence: Plant layout with clearance zones
QLD note: Same as baseline.
What Fair Dinkum Mechdecks covers

The clash zone around each unit shows the keep-clear area and can be adjusted per unit.

#S7SuggestedStructural / mechanical engineer

Vibration isolation and fatigue: isolate running plant and check frame members and connections for cyclic loading and resonance.

AS 4100AS/NZS 1664.1manufacturer data
Evidence: Isolator selection; fatigue check
QLD note: Same as baseline.
#S8SuggestedElectrical engineer

Evidence: Earthing / bonding details
QLD note: Same as baseline.
03

Approval

0/2
#10Builder / certifier
